Strange problem (aren't they all...)

Recommended Posts

Our 2015 Ducato never missed a beat until some dirty fuel (I'm certain) set off a series of varying error messages, limp modes and fruitless 'no fault found' visits to FIAT professionals.

As time (and frequent OBD clearances - thank you 'Torque') has passed it has settled down to one irritating fault - an occasional loss of power at about 2,500rpm. Not dying, just a reluctance to rev higher, usually in 5th or 6th and feeling like hitting the speed limiter. This is usually accompanied by the 'Change indicator' saying change up, when you obviously need to change down. Change down and rev, and all is well - until the next time. This also seems to happen when the outside temperature gauge is haywire. It has given various stupid readings, today it was saying 22° when it was actually 32°, confirmed by our local weather forecasts and my wife following in our Renault (we live in SW France).

Both the speed limiter and the temperature sensor have been linked to similar problems in the past (including here but I have no EML) but I can't find them again.

There must be some sensors controlling the change indicator, and does the outside temperature feed into the engine management?

Any experiences, views or opinions would be much appreciated - real world versus 'no fault found'!

The sensor for outside temperature  is in the drivers side wing mirror. Feeds into engine ECU and has an effect an all sorts of functions.

Fueling issue, suggest getting injectors checked, 'leak off test '. Use a diesel  specialist not Fiat.

A much better diagnostic is Multiecuscan,

TFC's 2015 motorhome is a Challenger Sirius 3008 model and the image in his avatar shows that the external mirrors are the high-mounted 'bus' type (photo below)

Whether there will be a temperature sensor in the mirror is anybody's guess...

Hi

Yes the ambient air temp sensor if damaged quite often causes a lot of problems as mentioned. The sensor is usally fitted in the mirror on base models , on yours, you will have to check , may be on the inside of the front grill or just in the scuttle under the wipers   A good diagnostic tool will show the fault with the sensor and any other faults that may be causing you issues , of course with a good technician operating same.

Regards

Yes, I'd thought about Multicuscan and will take another look. Torque is just so handy to live on my phone for quick access. I've found WiFi connection more reliable than Bluetooth, must see whether that connection is available.

Thanks for that - the sensor search now begins! It seemed too much of a coincidence that the poor running coincided with weird temperature readings!
