Can stinginess become an illness?

I come from a time when money was seriously tight and I know how to conserve my money, thats why I live in a big house that was valued at £400.000 two years ago, having said that a big 24' van would be overkill to my requirements. When we are out and about on trips we spend our time out doors not in the van.

Ah, you've obviously risen above us lesser mortals already.

BTW, had the house valued lately?

Soz - couldn't resist this:

But someone who really new how to conserve money would surely have sold that house 2 years ago and invested that capital in some other place, rather than just sitting in it watching it's market value drop from (say) 400,000 then to perhaps 250,000 now....and of course it'll be dropping further every day in the coming months too.

By not doing so I guess you've thrown maybe 100,000 to 150,000 pounds away in the past two years, even before estimating any capital growth that you could also have achieved by that equity being re-invested elsewhere....... :-(

Yes well, apart from the fact that you'd have to have had second sight two years ago you are in some way proving my point.

My home has declined in value by a very large amount but I couldn't give a toss! First of all it's still worth several times more than I paid for it when I bought it but even more importantly, it's my home.

It isn't an investment. When we bought it we did so because we loved the house, we loved its location and its proximity to good schools.

This is the difference between sensible people and the stingy ones. The stingy ones will buy a home for its investment potential. The sensible ones for its potential as a family home, in which to bring up that family.

I must also add though that Knight of the Road isn't one of those banging on about conserving his money. He seems to have a sensible attitude to enjoying it, without being profligate.

I simply cannot comprehend people who cannot enjoy a visit to a nice tea room, a good restaurant or a concert. You can eat at home or in your 'van, you can watch TV instead of going to a live theatre but, oh my, what a truly impoverished life you're living!

The combination of pompous self righteous arrogant and patronising attitudes and the penchant for digging up history is pathetic and so boring and predictable!

TO all the folks who can laugh at themselves, not take either themselves or anyone else on here seriously, smile and laugh a lot and enjoy life -

Well done - keep up the good work and enjoy it all!

TO all those other miserable sods and discontents who are so far up their own a~~eholes as to be outta sight -

EITHER - Get a life

OR - Carry on as you are and continue to give everyone else a good laugh.

And always remember to never judge a book by it's cover!

I thought you were advising people not to feed the trolls?

Do as I say, not as I do?

Parkmoy,

My six bed house was valued two years ago for 400 grand for insurence purposes, what it was valued at then and what it might be valued at now is immaterial it is not for sale.

With this house I have everything that I need, plenty of space a huge woodworking shop, my art studio anncillary sheds, greenhouse etc a huge garden big enough to open a caravan site and where I park my vehicles is bigger than most peoples house and garden put together, why sell?

I have reached my Valhalla, in my younger days I bought, renovated and sold property which enabled me to buy the house I am in now which I might add has been paid for these last 16 years.

I toyed with the idea of moving down to Dorset but the sheer logistics of moving was daunting so I shelved the idea, I have got what a lot of people can only dream of.

In which case why mention the value at all? Is it just to impress us poor lesser mortals?

Rupert - Unfortunately I think I can see now why you get a 'printed signature' Christmas card and not a hand-written one ...... I assume these so called 'friends' who send you it have been at the receiving end of your scorn as well and can't bring themselves to actually write the card as once they'd started, they'd probably end up saying exactly what they thought and I doubt if it would be 'Merry Christmas'! :-|

Sending a card at all shows they are tolerant and hopeful that your attitude will change. Somehow I think they are wasting their time ....

Its interesting (its being done correctly I hope Rupert!) that you seem to be sooooooo concerned about how people live their lives but then do your darnest to deride those who do not live it by your rules. You can't have it both ways I'm afraid.

Is the truth that you are one of those who fall into your being really stingy category and are trying to convince yourself that you are not alone as you don't want to be the odd one out?

:-S

GOTCHA - Again! Sooooooooooooooooooooo pompous, self righteous, patronising, arrogant and repetitive and best of all sooooooooooooooooo predictable!I am very proud of this last bit and I am indeed indebted to RGS to see him print it for what must be the eighth repeated time!"....... but saving money through ingenuity and awareness is indeed an art form, and for some of us a very satisfying art form, that can be developed over the years."So the answer is yes Rupert thanks - I do just love it!

BGD,

If you think for one minute I am going to sell a house that I have spent many many hours renovating to get it just how I want it, just to sell on, buy another house just to start all over again? you gotta be joking.

Yes property prices have fallen, did you predict the fall? did anyone else? I am in no fear of being repossessed, I made my money years ago, my camping activities are only a pleasurable past time, no more no less.

A house is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, assuming they can get a mortgage.

Property prices will come back, when that is no one knows, money invested and lost in banks you can't get back.

Hey Rich ... is there a record for how many times you've been quoted on here? Another former forumite was very good at quoting you constantly, but I think Rupert has well and truly surpassed his total.

Well done Rupert for being the 'best' at something ... any more quotes you'd like to use? I'd love to be in the upper echelons of being quoted like Richard ... go on ...... quote me again ...... pleeeeeaaasssee!!!!! (lol)

Oh God, another amateur psychologist! I get a few pre-printed cards amongst the large number that we get but they tend to be from acquaintances. My real friends are like me, intelligent and discerning and would never do a chavvy thing like send a pre-printed card! Also, they'd never have trouble with simple English and would know the difference between its and it's, which I notice troubles you occasionally. Oh, and they can spell ogling as well!

Damn, I shouldn't drag up these posts from the past - Tracker will blow a fuse!
