Some more pictures. I went through three revisions to get to the finish product. I'm only prevented from installing it by the quantity of snow around my Rapido 7090F

The angle support brackets will be marked and drilled to suit the pre existing holes in the 260mm deep chassis rails (pictured in the background behind the tape measure) The 75x50 steel box section is cut out to step over the return on the rails.

The 225 tyre plus the beam add up to 275mm so only 15mm of tyre below the lowest point of the chassis and still higher than the axle and my LPG tank.

The weight is 12kg max

Looking good. But on the van the wheel is pulled up tight against a flat floor. Could you get some packing in to stop it rocking front and rear?

It doesn't rock it sits tight to the 75x50 beam. SOLID

And on a van it does not go flat to the floor. it's not possible

My van is different to that, being the extra long wheelbase (L4) with 16" wheels the spare wheel is mounted further back. The front of the spare wheel is pulled up against a beam, which tilts it so the back is against the flat floor. I presumed this is what makes it solid. But if its solid without, that's fine :-)

When the wheel is fully wound up and the yellow dot appears in the winder window the coil spring on the end of the hanger shown above is under compression and holds the tyre tight to the beam.

It is exactly the same on the panel van for all it may appear to be tight to the floor it actually isn't.

yes that picture is the back of a panel van behind the axle, mine is in front of my axle because the grey waste tank is behind it.

The difference between mine and your standard fitment is the distance between the hanger and the beam. On the panel van as pictured the hanger is a good 50mm lower than the pressed steel rounded cross member that the tyre sits against at an angle like you say.

My hanger is only 19mm off my beam so holds the tyre under tension earlier against my flat beam horizontally.

It took me three revisions to get the tension right (lol)

I understand what you are saying about it being solid BUT it will move to some extent unless there is some sort of blocking attached to the underside of the vehicle at the front and rear of where the tyre sits - when you're hurtling down the motorway at 70mph there will be more pressure on the spare wheel than you can appreciate when its stationary.

 

It is interesting that the wheel is only attached by the one fixing in the centre and I assume that it winds up and down at this point.

It only moves as much as the rubber of the tyre can be forced to flex which is very little, as such it will absorb any vibration. It is shielded from the air stream by the engine bay lower cover, the exhaust the underslung LPG tank etc. It's going nowhere

Until some tealeaf comes along with a spare winding handle :D

 

If it was mine I'd have an obvious lock and chain around it (but probably with a 'wire' rather than a chain).

The winding port has a hole through it for a padlock and you need the winding shaft which is specific and 5 sided

Also thieves go for panel vans from whence this winder came. It is not to be expected on Alko chassis of late that does not get supplied with a spare rather a tin of crapola

Just an extra note to say

I fitted all of this and loaded the tyre with the vehicle flat on the ground.

Most vehicles this size carry millenco quatros which in the event would prove very useful.

If I was limping around with a flat I'd be seeking the assistance of a kerb or a Millenco whilst getting the spare off.

 

An old curtain works a treat to drag the tyre under or out of from under too

I got the winder off ebay

I made the rest

Winders vary from £40 delivered up to near £200. I paid £55 but just got a second one for £40

 

The steel, nuts and bolts and paint came to under £50

 

If buying a winder make sure it comes with the winding shaft! and that it is the right size 15 or 16" not interchangeable because of different bolt circle diameter.

All looks brilliant but I agree you need a blocker plate for an aft to stop rocking, remember if you ever use your spare a flat is going back on so the sidewalls will not hold it rigid against the cross beam. There is a plate avaliable for this from Fiat. which clamps uner the hoist mechanism.

If there were concern about the wheel 'rocking' on its attachment cross-beam, a couple of blocks of closed-cell polystyrene (or hardish foam plastic) glued to the underside of the motorhome's floor would prevent this happening.

 

The similar-principle system used on my Ford Transit pulls the spare wheel tightly against the underside of the floor-pan, so there's no possibilty of it rocking. There's also a secondary cable that would leave the spare wheel attached to the vehicle if the lowering/lifting cable broke. Frankly, if that happened, I think i'd rather lose the spare wheel (though anyone following me at the time might think otherwise!) rather than have it bouncing about underneath.

Does anybody have any idea of the part number for the fore/aft support bar that fits under the wheel hoist and to the front chassis member. I have emailed Fiat UK and some Fiat dealers but none have bothered to reply.

The carrier/hoist assembly is fitted to a Bessacarr E665 (16" Wheel)
