Problems with Media Unit on 2011 Autotrail Tracker

The media unit head in the dash is working ok - TV , DVD, and reversing camera showing on the small screen, but TV and DVD not showing on the overhead monitor when it is lowered. Previously when it was working the Monitor was showing a blue screen before switching on the TV head unit - now showing a white florescent screen. Visited local dealer today - explained problem - his response after consulting the dealership expert that the Monitor was 'knackered' and a new one would cost £300 approx. as it was out of the one year warranty. Any advice would be appreciated and the other question is just how much cover is given with the so called three year warranty ?

Hi

How can the monitor not be working if it is working as a reversing camera, that sounds wrong, it must be the input that's incorrect.

When we had an autotrail (2009 to 2012) we had problems with system and had to go back a few times ove an 18 month period cos it had been wired up wrong. First the reversing camera was showing mirror image and when they fixed that then the tv didn't work. Now I hardly ever use the reversing camera and we hardy watch tv at home and virtually never when away so it took quite awhile to discover the errors. I can't really remember the sequence of events now but I reckon you need a second opinion.

Perhaps an auto electrician who specialised in car sound systems? You just want it checked out and it would be worth a sma. Investment. Or could you take it to the Autotrail factory, they do servicing.

Good luck

Peter

It sounds like you've lost the signal input to the overhead monitor, possibly one of the wires bending every time you lower and raise it has finally broken.

Have you tried putting a signal from another source straight into the monitor, that should prove whether or not it is working.

I'd go along with Peter's advice and find an auto electrician or car audio engineer who could check things out for you before resorting to ordering a new screen.

Keith.

William,

I have a 2012 Autotrail with the 'Media' pack, the retaining clips on the Flip down screen on mine broke after only a few weeks use, asked about replacements, they (dealer) said it would need a new monitor (??) but that it was 'wear and tear' and Autotrail would not replace it for 'wear and tear'.

Still ongoing ! the version fitted is a very cheap and nasty one, far better ones on E-Bay for a lot less than £300.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Digital-HD-Screen-15-XGA-Car-Flip-down-Monitor-DVD-Player-Roof-Mount-Overhead-IR-/360760192636?pt=UK_Audio_TV_Electronics_In_Car_Entertainment_GPS_In_Car_Audio_Players_PP&hash=item53fefbae7c

And they play DVD's,CD's, USB sticks and SD cards. slightly deeper than the original but would still fit.

Mine already had the media pack fitted, but IF I had paid £999 extra for it I would have been VERY dissapointed, It tries to do too much for the money, the Sat-nav is useless to the point of being dangerous, sends you down all sorts of unsuitable places with a 25' motorhome, The Freeview tuner and remote drive us CRAZY by not placing BBC 1/2 , ITV etc., in their correct order as in 1234 etc. and of course every time you move you have to retune (normal) BBC 1 was once placed as 475 on the channel list (nearly got me murdered by the missus, who wanted her program....and quick !)

The reverse camera ONLY works when reverse gear is selected, I want to use the camera as a 'Rear vision' camera .....Autotrail say that is illegal..... Bulls**t.

I would rather have had a 'good quality' car radio, a ordinary 16" Avtex TV, and got the rest myself, AND had them fitted by a professional instead of an 'oik' on the production line, who doesn't have to 'Face the customer' after his handywork. (rant over).

Are you sure that the small round rocker switch in the 'Power' cupboard is switched 'on' ? that puts power to the Monitor. (just thought i'd ask). let us know how you get on with the replacement monitor.

As I believe,as it was an original fitment, it SHOULD be covered on the 3 year warranty. any experts

know any differant ?

Ray

on the warranty side...as FAIK if you bought it new it is a 2year factory warranty the 3rd year is insurance based and has certain exclusions (dont know what cos i havent read it yet *-) ) if you bought it 2nd hand and the warranty was not transfered to you the you will only get the dealers warranty whatever that maybe...i might be wrong but that is how i see it

however if you go an the auto trail website and contact them they do get back to you within 2 working days with an answer to your query and a cost or they might be sympathetic and give you it for nowt (but dont hold your breath *-) )

hope this helps

I have contacted Autotrail and received a negative response from them - the equipment is only guaranteed for one year - I also quoted the relatively small number of times we have used the equipment - again a negative response more or less implying that if the monitor had only been used once they still would not entertain replacement.

Yes they aren't very forthcoming are they at autotrail. I was just told that my dealer would have to sort it even though the dealer couldn't repair it and I wanted to pay (bypassing the supposed warranty ) have you tried a DVD ? And also have you got the correct amount of remote controls I think there should be two we bought ours second hand but was only given one remote and our overhead monitor never worked turned out they hadn't given us the correct remote haha !! It took us ages to realise cos we use an avtex telly ......also have you turned little black button on in psu ? Good luck pp are you allowed to say which dealers ?

Traced down the supplier - Armour Automotive - sent them an e-mail outlining the prob - answer back within one hour confirming that the fault was in/on monitor . Now locating Auto electronic/ tv repair man.

We have the unit fitted to our 2011 AutoTrail and are now on our third unit all I must say replaced by AutoTrail under warrenty including one replaced at their factory. Latest unit seems to be Ok so far but certainly not worth the money. No text facility and a bugger if you found say a hundred stations and have to flick through half of them to change from ITV to BBC. They would be better to supply a simple drop down TV that worked as well as the Avtex we have in the back which always out performs the AutoTrail unit. They know they have a problem with it but still go on fitting it.

One tip you might find usefull is that it can be swamped if the signal is two strong and it sounds very much as if that may be you problem. Try adjusting the gain control on your arial. We often have to adjust ours depending on the signal strength of the site we are on.

I must say that we are very happy with the a tubal motorhome.

Ii quite like Autotrail motorhomes but this has to be one of the most over complicated solutions to a problem that doesn't exist that I've come across. We hear of so many posters with issues on these units.

For many vanners upgrading to a MH like this, they will have TV equipment which they know works, whether it be Freeview or satellite.

The other annoying issue is that you can't even see the screen from the cab seats with your feet up so of no use whatsoever to us.

Our first Bolero had a smaller version of this type of kit and it was a real pain to use, I think it even had three remotes! We soon put on a dish and got our own 22" TV which we can watch from the comfort of a decent armchair.

I'd save my money.

Eyup Colin I thought tubal was motorhome speak for a certain kind of coachbuilt: That I'd never heard of lol. If I was having to spend money on the drop down monitor I'd do the same as bolero boy and buy a DVD playing telly in fact we did first a cheap logic then an avtex and we don't bother with the drop down one the hubby was always bashing it with his head anyway especially if they want you to part with £300 . There are two other problems with the unit. If you use the auto- tune it only finds the programs that are running, thus if you tune it in in the morning it will not find BBC 3 & 4 which don't start transmitting untill later. If you not to watch one of these you will then need to retune when theynarebon.

Secondly the actual receiver is in the dash unit so to get the remote to work you need to point it at that not the monitor. What's more as it is such a pathetic low powered mote you have to get up and get close to the unit to get it to work at all.

I have now taken the unit off - ten minute job - easy- eight screws and three wires to disconnect all snap connectors. The unit is now with the local tv man - will see what he comes up with. If I have to replace it I can buy a new monitor for £150 max and presumably as easy to install as the original was to take off - so where does the Dealer get £300 from ? Will post the outcome.

My local tv repair man could not find any wiring/ other tech. info on the internet about the unit. He explained he thought the fault was, but needed the info as how to get into it as he said that it was not similar to other monitors he had repaired with a similar problem.

Now considering whether to replace the monitor or put a drop down television in its place bearing in mind problems people have experienced with the head unit in the dashboard. My overall opinion is that the unit installed by Autotrail is a 'cheapi'.

Ive been thinking along the same lines, but not sure if the aerila lead goes to the head unit and then a "data" cable to the monitor. In which case running a new coax from the status to the replacement tv may prove difficult.

I think that you will have to run a new coax straight up to the tele.- in the Tracker I think I can see away which will be hidden and not too difficult. Have a good look - you will be surprised what is hidden in the lockers. - best of luck !
