veletron Posted June 29, 2020 Share Posted June 29, 2020 You'll probably get a row from the forecourt staff these days trying to use one of these. You can only fill from totally empty, since that's the only way you can accurately measure to the 80% level. Gas bottles should not be filled beyond 80% to allow some space above the liquid for it to 'gas' and to allow for temperature-expansion. Failure to observe this could see liquid rather than vapour entering your gas pipes, boiler,cooker etc, which has the potential to cause a fire. Fitting an in-situ system from the likes of Gasit, Autogas, Gaslow is a far safer/elegant way forward. Karen Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

hallii Posted June 29, 2020 Share Posted June 29, 2020 There have been a couple at least of forecourt fires filling cylinders with adapters, in one the attendant was badly burned. This was abroad, however , as already mentioned , the forecourt staff will probably simply refuse to turn the pump on, they all have CCTV nowadays. A lot of forum members use legitimate refillable systems and if one bad apple causes filling stations to block filling of any and all cylinders then who will suffer. If anyone wants to look for videos and try it themselves then let them do so but please do not post such links on the forum. Thanks all. Keith. Some of the videos go into considerable detail regarding the better type of adapter to employ and the safety measures that should be taken: some of the videos are produced by idiots. The fact that user-refilling of ‘on hire’ bottles conflicts with the hire compay’s conditions is either dismissed or not mentioned. Years ago composite-construction gas bottles were being marketed in the UK by a company called MTH Gas Supplies. These bottles were made by Kompozit Praha, the same manufacturer that makes Safefill bottles - but the MTH bottles had none of the Safefill bottles’ safety features. Like Safefill bottles, the MTH containers were bought outright by the user, so there was no contractual ‘ownership’ conflict when it came to refilling. The MTH bottle also had an advantage over a metal canister, as its gas contents-level could been seen through the bottle’s translucent plastic and the amount of gas that could safely be put in (ie. so an 80% fill was not exceeded) could be easily calculated. (Images of MTH bottles attached below). Refilling an MTH bottle with autogas was via the type of adapter enquired about by Richie in the original posting. I owned an MTH bottle for years and refilled it in the UK and abroad. The refilling methodology was similar to refilling a Calor/Flogas canister, except I knew how much liquified gas could be put in before refilling commenced. However, refilling my MTH bottle did always go smoothly, as not only did the MTH container not have an 80%-full cut-off valve, my adapter also had no non-return valve. Exciting moments when a French autogas pump’s ‘gun’ failed to connect properly to the adapter, and when a French pump failed to shut off and 100% filled the bottle.
