Mel. That is a cracking photo. I love that Aire as well but it does make me sad as we always seem to stop there on the way home after a long trip. :-(

When you have a view like that, friendly neighbours and a handy little village nearby why would anyone swap that for a campsite? Its beyone me.

I imagine that the "Aires" system was rolled out across France to encourage people, french as much as others, to travel around the country spending money in small communities. Different communities had different ideas about what would attract motorhomes, and what would just suffice. It looks like some really bought into the idea, some just made a token gesture. A bit like campsites really!

Having followed this thread and the other one currently on the go; I'm more inclined to give aires a go. But I'll plan, and I'll look for the good ones. Might even come across some surprises.

Happy camping,

alan b

And hasnt it worked for the French! Oh yes. France may be a wonderful place to visit but lets face it one of the main reasons so many motorhomers from all nations visit is because they make it easy for us. If only the UK could follow their example!

Once you get used to Aires and find a few good ones you will never look back and will wonder why you bothered with campsites at all!

Another one on the Seine can't remember the name about 20 miles west of Rouen, this one was a private Aire fenced in more like a camp site I think it was 8€ a night.

You're a self professed oddity with not a complete grasp of your faculties, so don't count:D. Seriously though Hugh on the way to pick his one up so counts you out, and sounds like Bruce may be on the list soon as doing the sums!lol Nice west end show last night, "Once" at the Phoenix theatre. I loved the film (cult budget job) but musical very good.....

Well I did do some updates about a year ago:

https://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Adria-Twin-v-Hymer-Car-322/27140/31/#M311507

https://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/-Up-sizing-update-Tugging-again/27369/

We chose the Hobby Van in the end. The Adria Twins which we looked at had been “mutilated” by Mr DIY! And your advice re the “vintage” of those Adria vans was very helpful.

I have to say, that although OH is perfectly happy with the Hobby, I quietly plan to return to a PVC at some future date!!! He doesn’t know that yet of course!!!

What will be your next van????

Cheers

Gwen

Thanks Mel, i have added the photos here

I've got photos of lots of aires as I take photos of them when we visit as a 'memory jog' for the future, I also note them down as I do a brief diary whilst we're travelling. When I get back off holiday I'll see if I can put together some more photos for you to use. :-D

Thanks Barry. We used it for the first time in 2007 on our way back home when we got very bad sunburn whilst canoeing down the Ardeche gorge ... 23km, took 8.5 hours!!! 8-) Hubby got 2nd degree burns on his lower legs and feet, and his ankles were a right mess ... but that's another story! *-)

Lovely vans - coachbuilt accommodation with the added advantage of a sliding door and the elimination of leaks. Great.

Ah well...... :-| I think this the best layout going, very open plan with two lounging areas.....Adria beds tend to be more practical, where the bed tips up in place in a minute and you just pop it back down again...Possl a bit more faf'ing about and why I never went for one when I bought the Adria as simply not as practical. But dealer had agreed to fix the French bed so one side tilted up to accommodate bikes, still giving two single beds, get to destination, bikes locked up outside and no bike rack (expensive bikes)

planning trip to Sri Lanka instead. Jerusalem looking a bit dodgy and Istanbul now shelved as well!

Of course, originally, aires were only designed for overnight stops.

That's where the expression " aire today, gone tomorrow " comes from.

Malc, jokes unlike wine do not improve with age.

Kindly leave the stage. ;-)
