Bullets tastless point scoring has proved to be pointless *-) .......

You're now using Russia as your QA yardstick?? Good grief, we really are all doomed! :-|

Russian population 146,000,000. UK population 65,000,000. Big country gets more cases than medium sized country! Well, who'd have thought it? Hallelujah, we're all saved!

Plus, no-one knows with certainty how many cases there are/have been in either country.

You're doing it again, comparing half-understood, inaccurate, figures. How many times...………………….??! 8-)

Even taking the figures reported in the article Pelmet linked, it's still way lower than ours Brian....including after allowing the 70%.

From his link;

Russia today reported 10,899 new cases with a record 107 new deaths. This brings Russia's Covid-19 death toll to 2,116. This comes amid reports that the Kremlin's daily figures may be underestimating fatalities by as much as 70 per cent.

As Pelmet loves using other countries to divert attention away from his Brexit government shortcomings in handling Coronavirus cases here, he might like to give the forum his informed 'wisdom' as to how Thailand, a country with a population of 69.5 million, has just 3017 cases with 56 deaths.

Still no apology for starting a thread spreading Lies? *-) ........

Ahem! :-D

Definition: Lie. noun: a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.

Which raises the little matter of your ability to prove "deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood."

It isn't helpful to throw around extravagant claims that you have no hope whatever to proving, and even less hope of knowing. The figures change daily, so what was true yesterday may be untrue to day, and vice versa. The figures are also subject to review and change as they are refined.

Since you are yourself very fond of selectively quoting from them when they seem fleetingly to you to say what you'd like them to say, completely ignoring the simple fact that tomorrow your claim will probably b misplaced. Unless you wish us all to accept that you too are a liar, and therefore all your pronouncements are valueless, why not just accept that statements are made in good faith, based on shifting sand, and are liable, as are your own, to be mistaken. A mistake, made in good faith, is not a lie - it is a mistake. Basic English?

You could then dazzle us all with your explanation as to why the original statement was mistaken, with supporting reasons.

That would be such a welcome change from merely chucking uninformative bricks. :-D

The op of this thread was taken verbatim from the ONS figure in the article. I have since linked to a live clip with Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter stating government’s method of giving out numbers on Covid-19 deaths and testing is “not the trustworthy communication of statistics” condemning ministers for using daily coronavirus figures as "number theatre" rather than providing "genuine information" to the public and saying the actual total is "much higher". Rather than address those points you fling out your usual ad homs, "Boris basher", "loser", "liar", "fake news" etc, attacking the messenger rather than the message which just makes you look silly. If anyone should be apologising it is you for your incessant use of ad hominens, wild conjecture and your obvious Brexit driven anxiety to defend at all costs.

To minimise the impact of such overwhelming statements from credible sources you choose to quote figures per 100k population which has no relation to the op, even at one point citing Russia though God knows why as their figure is even lower! But as you decided to try 'going global', i linked a country with a comparable population to UK (Thailand) which has just 56 deaths from Covid-19......yet you've completely ignored responding to that. Why?

Brians post summed up your silly accusation of 'spreading lies' and invited you to "dazzle us all with your explanation as to why the original statement was mistaken".....bearing in mind the ONS figure quoted the total. You failed to.

But, Dear Dave, Bullet's post and figures were from 5 May: your info is from 15 May. Surprise, surprise, the numbers have changed. The number base is dynamic, not static.

What did I say? "Since you are yourself very fond of selectively quoting from them .........….completely ignoring the simple fact that tomorrow your claim will probably be misplaced."

As above, "completely ignoring the simple fact that tomorrow your claim will probably be misplaced".

If you want to prove your claim you have to do two things.

First, quote the figures from 10 days ago that disprove Bullet's figure was incorrect, and …….

Second, prove that Bullet deliberately quoted incorrect figures, or distorted or deliberately misquoted the correct figures.

If you can't do both, you should politely and publicly withdraw your allegation that Bullet is a liar.

There's no point saying the figures are based on differing ways of counting - we've been telling you for weeks. That is what makes the comparisons so pointless.

You can't have it both ways: your misunderstandings are only mistakes; others' misunderstandings are lies.

The FT compared this years death figures with the average in the same period of previous years.

This must be more accurate than the sh!te put out at the Downing Street press briefings, because it counts all those the Government doesn't count.

Its double what the Government claimed.

1 Are we still not fourth as we were when Bullet started the thread? *-) .........

2 Is the title to this thread not wrong? :-| ......

3 Frankly I'm no longer surprised that you are prepared to defend Bullets lies *-) ..........

This, from the guy who believes in "good, old fashioned, British common sense! Would that some were available to him! :-D

1 Using whose figures? Bullet quoted Metro from 5 May 2020, which was in turn quoting the then latest figures from the ONS. So, are you arguing that the ONS were wrong?

2 Fixed that for you! :-D

3 I'm not defending anyone's "lies": you have yet to prove the lie. I'm criticising your assertion that Bullet was lying, when you repeatedly quote similar numbers (as above: "fourth highest") that become incorrect 24 hours later, but don't accept that you lied in so doing. As I said, you can't have it both ways.

Being a little less inflammatory with your allegations might help, for a start.

Due to the absence of any logical reply from Pelmet to my question posted yesterday and yours, also today, the only conclusion i can draw is he's accusing the ONS of 'lying' but unable to prove how. :-|

Can't answer for Paul, but I'm making no such claim. I'm sure the ECDC's figures accurately represent the information they have today.

You really don't get it, do you? The figures vary daily - different day, different numbers. Your claim was that Paul lied, when what he did was correctly quote the ONS figure for 5 May, while you used figures from ECDC on 15 May to support your claim that Paul's post was a lie. It wasn't, it was true on that day: yours were different figures, on a different day, from a different source.

The figures continually vary, When Paul originally posted the UK did have the highest total of deaths from Covid in Europe. That is bad, but there was no lie.

In the meantime the figures for the UK and all other European countries that the ECDC logs have varied, so our place in the pecking order has changed. That is still bad, just no longer worst.

But, as I seem to have been trying to explain to you for half a lifetime, :-) one simply can't make meaningful comparisons using numbers that continually change. On moment the answer is A, the next it is Z. Can't you see that?

Neither Brian or i have been and it's about time you wound your neck in and ceased calling people liars when all along it's been your failure to comprehend the OP and desperately clutch at straws to try discrediting the original OP, thereby disagreeing with figures supplied by the ONS!! And as for trying Russia.....you really do make a clown of yourself!

Incidentally the figure on your link shows UK at 33,998 as of today. If you can find a European country with a higher figure then by all means post it up.

That's for you to show the number of deaths at May 5th, not ask others to provide you with the number. You've been asked to before but failed so i assume you don't know? The number in the OP was from the ONS which you disagree with but failed to prove otherwise.

Which was the OP header. Here is the procedure for accessing it, it's quite simple;

1) Return to page 1 of thread.

2) Look for OP (say if you don't know what that means).

3) Click link to open article.

4) Now post the header, sub-header and first three paragraphs from the report please.
